The Renaissance stargazer was born 550 years ago in Toruń, Poland. The stamp is based on a portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus in a Renaissance perspective with a night sky showing the sun with four orbits orbiting the planet. The spines of his scientific writings stand out in the background.
“I emphasised the typical features of Copernicus that we know from his portraits, i.e. the long nose and long hair and of course the planetary system,” said artist Jindřich Ulrich on how the stamp was created.
The author of the FDC engraving, of which 2,400 were produced, is engraver Bohumil Šneider. According to the authors, the view into the study area of a medieval monastery is meant to symbolise the contrast between the modern scientist and traditional monastic research. The inspiration for the figure of the monk comes from medieval wood engraving.
The denomination of the stamp is represented by the letter “B”, which corresponds to the price of CZK 23 and was printed in an offset edition of 750,000.
All of the newly issued stamps of the Czech Post will be available for purchase at its stand at the international fair Sberatel / Collector, which will take place from 8 to 9 September at the PVA Expo in Prague.
