The most valuable Czechoslovak banknote has a new owner. The five-thousandth state note sold for a record EUR 1 027 200 at an auction in Prague in November 2024, easily surpassing its perforated version, which previously held the record of EUR 580 000.
The starting price was set at €100,000. There are only two known surviving examples of this imperforate note in the world, and these are in private collections. Therefore, you will not find the banknote in the National Museum or the Czech National Bank.
“Even before the auction, we estimated that the price would certainly surpass the most expensive banknote to date, i.e. its perforated version, which we auctioned in 2020. The uniqueness of the auctioned banknote lies in the fact that there are so few surviving pieces in the world. The banknote was in circulation for less than 2 years. It was, of course, a high denomination. Moreover, the red 5,000 CZK note belongs to the most collectible issue of the so-called “First Czechoslovak Republic of 1919,” says Aleš Kohout, co-owner of the auction company Bankovky.com., which auctioned the note for his client.
