In the March auctions, investment silver coins worth almost EUR 40 000 or thousand crowns banknote with overprint in an interesting collector’s sequence were sold. Rare vltavins and lithographs by the well-known photographer Jan Saudek also found a new owner.
The first place in the imaginary auction ranking of the largest Czech online marketplace Aukro for March was taken by silver investment coins of the Wiener Philharmoniker. “The box contained 500 coins with a face value of 1.5 euros. The sale for almost EUR 12 500 shows that these coins are still perceived as a safe storage of wealth,” said Pavel Krejčíř, an expert on collecting and antiques on the Aukro portal, adding that in March, two more sales of these boxes of investment coins took place on Aukro, which meant that 1,500 coins were sold for almost EUR 40 000 in just the three transactions mentioned.
A set of 24 commemorative CZK 1,000 banknotes with a special overprint was sold for more than EUR 4 200 000. These were issued this year by the Czech National Bank on the anniversary of the split of the Czech-Slovak currency. The bank offered them at face value, but their price is much higher on the collectors’ market. The banknotes offered at the auction have thus appreciated more than fourfold.
The third place in the March Auction ranking belonged this time to a Czech unique among precious stones. Vltavinas are the only European rocks formed as a result of a meteorite impact. For their beauty they are rightly often cut and set in jewellery, or in their rough state they are the pride of many collectors. Last but not least, they are a great and very interesting investment – a collection of 60 pieces sold for EUR 2 700 in March.
The remaining positions of the top 10 auctions were taken by lithographs by the well-known Czech photographer Jan Saudek. Lithography or stone printing is the oldest surface printing technique. Several lithographs by Jan Saudek were sold in the collection of auctions called Paper and Silver, for example a lithograph titled Marie No. 1 sold for EUR 2 300. “The lithograph Marie No. 1 is based on a photograph taken in 1974,” added Pavel Krejčíř. “Within the collection of NumArt auctions, another Saudek lithograph called Coca Cola or the lithograph Oh those roaring sixties! was sold,” added Pavel Krejčíř.
The collection of French philately included a number of stamps and sold for EUR 2 800. Iconic armchairs of the Czech furniture industry of the First Republic were sold for only a slightly lower amount. The H-269 armchair was one of Jindřich Halabala’s most famous designs, mass-produced in the 1950s.
