The most expensive item auctioned in the online auction of banknotes circulating in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia from 1762 to the present day was the so-called Vienna banknote of 500 guilders from 1806. It sold for 55 200 Eur.
More than 1,200 lots with a starting price of more than 120 000 Eur went up for auction at the Bankovky.com auction in Prague in the second half of November.
For example, a one-crown note from 1919 with a wrong date (pictured) was auctioned for 26 400 Eur, according to the organisers.
A misprint of a CZK 200 banknote from 1993, the updated version of which is still valid in the Czech Republic, went for 22 000 Eur (CZK 552,000).
The paper for printing this 200 koruna was brought to the State Printer of Valuables from abroad, but the delivery mistakenly included paper intended for the Republic of Zaire. Most of these misprinted banknotes were captured either at the printer or at the Czech National Bank, but they were then destroyed. A smaller number of 200 crowns with the stripe REPUBLIQUE DU ZAIRE, however, made it into the public domain. Today, it is estimated that fewer than 100 have survived. The starting price of this misprint was 2 000 Eur.
In 2020, the Bankovky.com auction house auctioned the most valuable banknote in the Czech Republic. It was a five-thousandth note from 1919, which was auctioned for a record 580 800 Eur and this record has not yet been broken. In its time it was in circulation only until 1921 and collectors had a unique opportunity to buy it after 26 years.
