The Czech Post has recently issued a new postage stamp with a photograph of the famous Czech photographer František Drtikol. The famous photographer and graphic designer is considered one of the most successful Czech classics of nude photography.
The subject of the stamp is a photograph entitled Soul. The so-called “first day cover – FDC” shows a photograph entitled Nude.
The author of the graphic design of the stamp is the artist Milan Jaroš. The stamps were printed by offset in the stamp printing house in Hradištko and a total of 52,000 stamps were produced.
The postage stamp has a nominal price of CZK 34 (EUR 1.40), the FDC costs CZK 56 (EUR 2.30).
The work of František Drtikol (1883 – 1961) focused mainly on portraits and nudes in the late Art Nouveau style. His photographs began to be exhibited in 1911, first in Bohemia and then abroad. In 1922, František Drtikol had his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts, which confirmed his exceptional talent and artistic approach to photography.
In 1938, his photographic monograph entitled “Woman in Light” was published, containing 46 nudes. This publication represented a significant milestone in his career and received widespread attention both at home and abroad.
He is also known for his spiritual practice of the Eastern teachings, the Bhagavad Gita and Buddhism, and is hailed as the founder of Czech Buddhism.
The photographs of František Drtikol can now be seen in several prestigious galleries in the Czech Republic and abroad. Among the important institutions that exhibit his works are:
Moravian Gallery in Brno – Drtikol’s work is part of the permanent exhibition of photography in the Museum of Decorative Arts.
The National Gallery in Prague – His photographs are presented within the collections of modern and contemporary art.
Museum Kampa – Located in Prague and focuses on modern art including photography, where you can find Drtikol’s images.
Abroad, Drtikol’s photographs can be seen in several international galleries, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The most expensive photograph of František Drtikol sold at auction is known as “Nudes in Light” and fetched a price of approximately 4 million crowns (EUR 166 666).
In Příbram, the hometown of František Drtikol, you will find a gallery that bears his name and, in addition to holding exhibitions of other artists, maintains his legacy.
